I've owned a 4300 CollarShift for about a year. It's been in twice for transmission problems, and starting again. Deere recently offered to supply me with a new tractor, but would charge me a fee per hour on the old one. This is my first tractor and dealings with Deere. Is this normal? Or am I getting the shaft? (Tractor has ~150 hours on it)

I was told by my dealer that only tractors with belly mowers were covered by the upgrade (just a month ago they said mine would be covered). When I contacted Deere thru 1-800-WHO-CARES, I got the runaround and no definite answer. I didn't relize when buying this hunk of crap (transmission just fixed for second time and not even a year old) that my neighbors who have Kubota and New Holland deserve nicer looking yards than people who mistakenly buy green (and their tractors are larger than mine). I can't remember seeing anything in the sales literature that the 4000 series shouldn't be used to mow yards (I'm sure I just overlooked it).

If you have the mid-PTO I'd be hounding your dealer. Sounds like the fix is out there, but they're not very willing to do it. (Dealer said it would cost me $5000 to have it done to mine)

I purchased a collarshift 4300 last summer and I'm starting to have problems. A few months ago the dealer took it in, cracked it open, and readjusted the clutch shims due to consistent grinding while trying to shift into any gear. Now the grinding is starting again (but not all the time), and it pops out of gear whenever I try to put it in reverse on a hill. Anyone else seeing these problems? Any suggestions? I'm starting to consider getting everything working while it's still under warranty, selling it while I can, and buying BLUE (I hurts to actually say that).

I'm not much help, but had the exact same problem on my collarshift 4300. It cycled for a day, then mysteriously quit after I called the dealer to come get it (fluid level wasn't low either). It's these little things that are starting to make me second guess my purchase.

I have a 4300 with a 6' Landpride rear discharge mower and love it. I mow 8 acres and it does a great job. But Randy is right, if a mound or ridge gets in between the wheels, you are going to scalp. If you don't have alot of small mounds or ridges, I think with the 4 air tires it flows over the ground better than those I've seen with rollers. My property was originally mostly farm land, but after some grading and getting the ground hogs to move to the neighbors, I don't have any problems (I would have done this regardless of which mower I picked). All in all, it's heavy duty and does a great job mowing.

I'm new to the board, and have been having the infamous scuff problems also (I purchased a 4300 4WD with R4 tires last summer). I just contacted my dealer, and he told me that Deere is in the process of sending out upgrade kits for all 4000 models regardless of tire type. My dealer guesses this upgrade would start in the next few months. That's the latest I've gotten, and from past experiences, I don't think he's making it up.
